Pet Food Packaging: Test the Bottom of a Retail Case

Pet food pouches may leave the factory in neat rows yet arrive with pressure marks on the units at the bottom of a case.

Pet food pouches may leave the factory in neat rows yet arrive with pressure marks on the units at the bottom of a case. Kaida lists pet food packaging as an application. A buyer should examine that bottom position when choosing pack shape, fill and carton count, because it experiences the combined weight and movement of the units above it.

Define the inputs

Record filled pouch dimensions, product density and planned case configuration. Note how cases will be stacked and which panel faces a neighboring pouch. Provide the supplier a filled reference, not just the retail artwork. The shape of pellets or pieces may create local pressure points that a flat film specification will not show.

Test the proposed pack

Make a trial case with labelled positions and subject it to the expected handling route. Open the case and compare top, middle and bottom units for base deformation, seam condition, print scuff and opening function. Keep photographs paired with their positions. A defect that appears in one repeatable location suggests a different investigation from a random print flaw.

Resolve the design question

If the bottom units are affected, consider case count, orientation, outer carton and pouch geometry as separate variables. Change one and repeat the trial. Ask the filler whether a different fill profile could help without altering the product specification. Keep the decision tied to the exact SKU; a larger size will require its own check.

Release the decision

Release the pouch and case configuration together, with an inspection example for receiving teams. That makes a future carton-saving proposal reviewable against the filled package, rather than treating the outer case as a purchasing detail unrelated to pack quality.

Record whether case compression changes reclosure or opening at home. The retail pack should still serve its consumer purpose after distribution handling.
