Packaging Line Trials: Budget Material for Learning
A line trial needs material for setup, controlled comparisons and retained samples.
Separate setup from evidence
A line trial needs material for setup, controlled comparisons and retained samples. For a new roll-film project with Kaida, a request for a small sample roll should explain all three uses. If most material disappears during threading and adjustment, the team may leave with a running machine but too few stable-run packs to support a packaging decision.
Build the trial quantity from tasks
Ask the filler to estimate startup consumption, the number of planned settings, sample pulls and any restart sequence. List the product needed for filling alongside film or pouch quantities. Reserve material for a repeat of the most important condition. Use the filler’s experience and actual machine inputs; a generic roll length or pouch count should not be treated as a universal trial requirement.
Name the decision at each stage
Write down what the team must learn from setup, stable running and handling checks. Allocate samples to the buyer, supplier and any testing laboratory before the trial begins. Label their destination and purpose. This prevents a visually attractive sample from being used for artwork review when it was the only specimen retained for a technical investigation.
Track consumption while running
Log material used for threading, adjustment, stable production and rejected output. Record why each interruption occurred. If remaining material becomes insufficient, prioritize the pre-agreed critical checks and document what was not completed. Do not turn an unfinished trial into a full approval because the available sample roll has ended.
Use the outcome for the next trial
Compare planned and actual consumption, then send Kaida the settings tested, sample IDs and remaining questions. The next trial request can be sized around a defined decision. That improves the usefulness of every sample shipment without inventing a standard quantity for machines and products that behave differently.
