Mono-PE Pouch Closures: Include Every Component in the Brief

A mono-PE film target can become confusing when the proposed package also has a zipper, spout, cap, label or adhesive.

A mono-PE film target can become confusing when the proposed package also has a zipper, spout, cap, label or adhesive. Kaida has a mono-PE packaging category and discusses recyclable flexible packaging on its site. The buyer's useful first step is to define the entire finished package, including closures, rather than using a film name as shorthand for the whole design.

Define the inputs

Draw a component list for the actual pack: printed film, seals, zipper or fitment, cap, label and any tamper feature. Ask who supplies each component and which specifications are controlled. Note whether the closure is necessary for product use or simply carried forward from an older design. That question can open useful alternatives without promising any particular recovery outcome.

Test the proposed pack

Trial the complete pack with the intended product. Check filling and sealing around added components, then check normal opening and reclosing. If one component changes during the trial, update the sample label and repeat the relevant tests. A flat film data sheet cannot show how a sealed fitment or thick zipper area behaves on the buyer's machine.

Resolve the design question

For a sustainability claim or collection route, ask the team responsible for the target market to review the complete construction and local rules. Keep that evidence separate from the line-trial evidence. A pack can run well and still need a different route for collection; conversely, a proposed material direction still has to survive the intended use.

Release the decision

Release one versioned bill of materials and a filled approved sample. Identify the market, product and package configuration covered by the decision. Procurement then has a practical way to review substitutes and can spot when a new cap or label changes the construction that was previously assessed.
